Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that it has initiated talks with veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin about a potential appearance in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 season. If the deal materializes, Ashwin would become the first high-profile Indian cricketer to feature in Australia’s premier T20 competition.
The development comes just days after Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating his intention to explore opportunities across global franchise leagues. At 38, the off-spinner remains one of the most respected names in the game and could provide a huge boost to the BBL.
Cricket Australia CEO confirms making a call to Ravichandran Ashwin
CA CEO Todd Greenberg revealed that he personally reached out to Ashwin soon after his IPL retirement. While discussions are still in the early stages, Greenberg expressed confidence that a deal could be finalized.
“To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” Greenberg was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.
The CEO added that the next step involves working with clubs and stakeholders to create a proposal suitable for Ashwin, considering factors like availability and potential team allocation.
Which BBL franchise could sign Ashwin?
Though nothing has been finalized, reports suggest Ashwin might be Perth or Melbourne-bound, with franchises such as Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Stars or Melbourne Renegades seen as possible destinations. However, with all eight BBL teams having already spent most of their salary purse during the player draft, Cricket Australia may need to devise a special arrangement to accommodate Ashwin.
According to reports, the CA is ready to explore flexible solutions, even considering bespoke financial structures, to ensure Ashwin’s inclusion. His signing would not only raise the competitive level of the tournament but also significantly expand its global audience.

Why Ashwin’s move could be a game-changer for BBL?
Cricket Australia has long maintained its ambition of elevating the BBL to the status of the world’s leading T20 leagues, rivalling the IPL. The addition of a globally recognized Indian player like Ashwin could serve as a watershed moment for the tournament.
With millions of followers and a strong fan base across cricket-loving nations, Ashwin’s participation would bring heightened viewership, media attention and sponsorship opportunities. It could also pave the way for future collaborations and greater Indian representation in overseas leagues.
