The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 witnessed another nail-biting finish as St Kitts & Nevis Patriots edged past Guyana Amazon Warriors by just five runs in Match 25 at the Providence Stadium on Monday. After being asked to bat first, the Patriots posted 149/6 before their bowlers held their nerve to restrict the Warriors to 144/8 in a tense chase.

Mohammad Rizwan’s classy knock takes St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to competitive total

After being asked to bat first, the Patriots posted 149/6 in their 20 overs, thanks largely to a magnificent knock from Mohammad Rizwan. The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter stood tall while wickets kept tumbling around him, anchoring the innings with a fluent 85 off 62 balls that included eight boundaries and three sixes.

Early in the innings, Andre Fletcher’s brief cameo ended at 7, while Kyle Mayers and Leniko Boucher departed cheaply, leaving Rizwan with the responsibility of rebuilding. He stitched small partnerships, first with Rilee Rossouw (14 off 15) and later with Jason Holder (7 off 6), ensuring the Patriots maintained momentum. Navin Bidaisee added a valuable 22 off 21 balls late in the innings to push the total close to 150.

For the Warriors, Hassan Khan was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/21, while Gudakesh Motie claimed 2/44. Imran Tahir was economical as always, conceding only 19 runs in his four overs but went wicketless.

Guyana Amazon Warriors falter in tense chase

Chasing 150, Guyana Amazon Warriors began steadily with Ben McDermott (21 off 18) and Shai Hope (31 off 27) giving a solid foundation. However, the middle order could not capitalise on the start. Moeen Ali contributed 19, but Shimron Hetmyer once again struggled to convert, falling for 9.

The Warriors’ chase was characterized by frequent setbacks, as the Patriots’ bowlers struck at regular intervals. Despite cameos from Hassan Khan (11), Keemo Paul (9), and Romario Shepherd (8), the innings lacked a big partnership that could take them across the line. Quentin Sampson’s quickfire 14 off 7 sparked some hope towards the end, but Naseem Shah and Waqar Salamkheil bowled brilliantly at the death to seal the game for the Patriots. Guyana eventually finished on 144/8, falling agonizingly short by just five runs.

The Patriots’ bowling unit deserves equal credit for defending a modest total on a batting-friendly pitch. Naseem’s pace and variations earned him 2/29, while Salamkheil’s left-arm spin troubled the Warriors in the middle overs, finishing with 2/28. Holder, as always, was disciplined, picking up 1/21 from his four overs. Bidaisee (1/22) and Dominic Drakes (1/8) chipped in with timely breakthroughs, ensuring the Warriors never gained full control of the chase.

For his match-winning knock, Rizwan was adjudged Player of the Match. His 85 was the highest individual score of the game and proved to be the defining difference between the two sides.
