The 2025-26 Australia Domestic One-Day Cup, also known as the Dean Jones Cup, continued with a high-octane contest on September 16 at Allan Border Field, Brisbane. Queensland Bulls skipper Marnus Labuschagne produced a captain’s performance, smashing a century and pulling off a jaw-dropping catch as his side defeated Victoria by 55 runs in the second game of the tournament.

Marnus Labuschagne leads from the front with the bat

Opting to bat first, Queensland made the most of good conditions as their leader anchored the innings with authority. Coming in at No. 3, Labuschagne struck a magnificent 130 off 118 balls, his first List A century since the 2016-17 season. His knock combined classic patience with bursts of aggression, featuring elegant strokes through the covers and quick singles to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Jack Wildermuth provided the late flourish, blasting an unbeaten 54 off just 30 deliveries. His acceleration ensured Queensland posted a commanding 310 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs, setting Victoria a stiff chase.

Glenn Maxwell’s counterattack keeps Victoria alive

Victoria’s reply faltered early as Queensland’s bowlers struck with regular breakthroughs. However, Glenn Maxwell revived the chase with an electrifying innings. The experienced campaigner hammered 107 runs from 82 balls, displaying his trademark ability to dominate spinners and clear the ropes with ease.

Despite Maxwell’s heroics, Victoria lacked meaningful partnerships around him. Once he was dismissed, the resistance faded, and the side was eventually bowled out for 255 in 46.2 overs. Queensland’s bowlers shared the wickets, ensuring their skipper’s knock did not go in vain.

Labuschagne’s blinder steals the show

The defining moment of the match, however, came not with the bat but in the field. In the 27th over of Victoria’s chase, Mitchell Swepson delivered a teasing length ball to Will Sutherland. The edge flew sharply towards first slip, and Labuschagne, stationed low, reacted with lightning reflexes.

Diving to his right, he grasped the ball cleanly just above the turf, completing a stunning catch that left both teammates and fans in awe. The dismissal of Sutherland not only broke Victoria’s middle-order resistance but also showcased Labuschagne’s commitment as a leader.
