Former Indian captain Virat Kohli left cricket fans in awe with a sensational catch in Team India‘s opening match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia. Kohli’s acrobatic effort in the slip cordon sent Australia’s Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion early in the game.
Kohli’s marvelous catch
In a highly anticipated clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Australia won the toss and chose to bat on a spin-friendly Chepauk track. In just the second over of the innings, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah delivered a short of length delivery around the off-stump, resulting in an edge from Marsh’s bat.
The moment of brilliance came when Kohli, fielding at slips, showcased lightning-quick reflexes and a Superman-esque dive to his left. Kohli managed to grasp the ball safely with both hands, leaving the Indian fans ecstatic. The stunning catch not only removed Marsh but also set the tone for India’s fielding performance.

Absence of Shubman Gill
India’s decision to bowl first proved fruitful as they kept Australian run-flow in check with their disciplined bowling. Meanwhile, star opener Shubman Gill, who was initially slated to open for India, was rested due to illness. Captain Rohit Sharma revealed duing the toss and announced the inclusion of Ishan Kishan to take Shubman’s place at the top of the order.
“The conditions are there for the bowlers, and the ball will turn as the game goes on. You need to understand what line and lengths to bowl and adjust accordingly. We played a lot of cricket before that, we played two good series before the warm-up games, we have covered all bases. Unfortunately, he (Shubman Gill) didn’t recover in time, we waited till today morning, and he couldn’t recover. Ishan comes in to replace him; he will open the batting,” said Rohit during the toss.
