The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 witnessed a remarkable clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The match was headlined by outstanding performances from Pakistani cricketers Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique, who set the stage ablaze with their stunning centuries.
Pakistan achieved a historic victory with a record-breaking chase of 345 runs against the Islanders, showcasing their dominance in the tournament. Rizwan’s performance was a standout moment, but it came with a visible struggle.
During his time at the crease, Rizwan appeared to be in discomfort due to cramps, likely a result of his demanding role as a wicket-keeper for the full 50 overs of the game. Despite the discomfort, he persisted, showing incredible determination, and ultimately scoring a match-winning century.
Shoaib Akhtar’s comparative analysis
Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar took notice of Rizwan’s ordeal and drew comparisons with India’s KL Rahul, who faced a similar challenge during a match against Australia in the intense heat of Chennai. Rahul, after keeping wickets for his team, went on to score a valiant unbeaten 97, contributing significantly to India’s six-wicket victory.

“Muhammad Rizwan gets cramps very often. I can understand that you are not a very big unit, and it is very demanding on the body to keep wickets for 50 overs and then score a hundred. But KL Rahul also kept wickets in Chennai heat and almost scored a hundred,” Akhtar stated during one of his YouTube channel episodes, highlighting the physical demands of the role.
Akhtar’s praise for Rizwan’s grit
While making comparisons, Akhtar didn’t fail to shower high praise on Rizwan. He lauded the wicketkeeper-batter for his brilliant batting performance and his role in steering Pakistan to victory.
“Mohammad Rizwan took Pakistan home with a brilliant knock. The way he batted in the second half of his innings was very crucial. The way he scored after crossing 70 was very heartwarming to see. He played for his country and made sure they won,” added Akhtar, emphasizing Rizwan’s match-winning contribution.
