In a scintillating display of power-hitting, Glenn Maxwell, the Australian all-rounder, set the stage on fire during Australia’s clash against Sri Lanka in match 14 of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. Maxwell’s explosive innings, where he scored 31 from 21 balls, played a pivotal role in securing Australia’s first win in the ongoing tournament. Maxwell’s show also took him into the record books, as he surpassed Kieron Pollard to claim a remarkable six-hitting record.

Maxwell’s record-breaking six-hitting feat

With two towering sixes against Sri Lanka, Maxwell achieved a significant milestone by becoming the visiting batter with the most sixes in India across all formats. His tally of 51 maximums now surpasses the previous record held by the West Indian powerhouse, Pollard, who had accumulated 49 sixes in India.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with legends

Notably, Maxwell’s feat has placed him in the company of cricketing legends. Former Afghanistan captain Ashgar Afghan and South African maestro AB de Villiers jointly hold the third spot in the list of visiting batters with the most sixes in India across all formats, with 48 sixes each. Maxwell’s achievement is a testament to his ability to clear the boundaries consistently, a feat that only the best in the business can accomplish.

A remarkable feat in Australian ODI history

Maxwell’s proficiency in hitting sixes is not limited to international records alone. In the context of Australian ODI cricket, his feat holds immense significance. With his two massive blows against Sri Lanka, Maxwell now ranks fourth in the list of Australian batters with the most sixes in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He has overtaken former Australian captain Aaron Finch, who had 129 sixes to his name.

In this elite list, Maxwell stands behind only three other Australian greats. The iconic Ricky Ponting tops the chart with 158 sixes, followed closely by Adam Gilchrist with 148 sixes, and Shane Watson with 131 sixes. Among active Australian players, David Warner, with 107 sixes, is the nearest challenger to Maxwell’s record.
