In a high-stakes encounter at the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan’s pace sensation Haris Rauf faced the wrath of Australian openers during Match 18, leaving fans astounded as David Warner and Mitchell Marsh took him to the cleaners. Rauf, known as one of the fastest bowlers in the world, endured a torrid time, conceding a whopping 24 runs in his very first over against Australia.
Rauf’s costly over
Rauf’s nightmare over against Australia became a topic of conversation worldwide. The pacer’s first over was the third most expensive over by a Pakistani bowler in the history of the ODI World Cup, following the unfortunate outings of Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Akhtar in the 2011 edition. In that edition, Razzaq had been hit for 30 runs against New Zealand, while Shoaib Akhtar conceded 28 runs in the same game.
Australia’s dominance
Rauf’s misery commenced with Warner, who seemed to have deciphered the pace bowler’s rhythm almost immediately. After smashing Rauf for a boundary on the very first ball of the over, Warner lofted him for a colossal 98-meter six over fine leg, a shot that reverberated through the stadium.
Rauf was then granted a brief respite as Warner took a single off the third delivery. However, the torment continued as Marsh relentlessly hammered Rauf for three consecutive boundaries on the last three balls of the over. Rauf ended up conceding 47 runs in his first three overs before Pakistan captain Babar Azam took him out of the attack
Australia’s aggressive intent was evident from the outset, as they attacked all bowlers mercilessly. The Australian opening pair established a formidable 100-run partnership for the first wicket in the 13th over of the match. Warner set the tone with his aggressive batting, reaching his half-century in just 39 deliveries, with Marsh swiftly following suit and smashing a fifty.
Fans reactions
In the wake of Rauf’s ordeal, cricket fans took to social media to express their opinions and, in some cases, engage in some light-hearted trolling.
