In the Match 20 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the defending champions, England, are clashing with South Africa at the prestigious Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The game began with a bang as Reece Topley swiftly dismissed Quinton de Kock on just the second ball of the innings.
However, the English side faced a setback when Topley was struck on the end of his left-hand index finger during his fourth over, raising concerns about his ability to continue in the match.
Reece Topley’s fierce reaction
As Topley went off the field for further medical assistance, his mounting frustration over the injury found an unexpected outlet. Frustrated by his physical setback, he took out his anger on unidentified objects encountered along his path. Moving towards the dressing room, a chair in his way became the next unintended target of the Ipswich-born cricketer’s frustration. With a swipe of his right hand, he sent the chair tumbling out of sight.
Upon reaching the England dressing room, his frustration showed no signs of abating. From outside the glass front of the room, the right-arm bowler was seen venting his anger by throwing objects at the glass and storming around, hastily knocking items off tables. Topley’s emotional outburst served as a visible manifestation of his disappointment and aggravation.

Resilient come back to the field
Despite the evident anger and concerns following injury setback, Topley displayed resilience by making a comeback on the field midway through South Africa’s innings. After returning to the field, the latter bagged two more crucial wickets, dismissing skipper Aiden Markram and David Miller. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old’s performance proved expensive, as reflected in his figures of 3/88 in 8.5 overs.
Capitalizing on a solid batting display by Heinrich Klaasen (109 off 67) and Marco Jansen (75 not out off 42) in the end, South Africa managed to post a formidable total of 399-7 in their allotted 50 overs.
