The ODI World Cup 2023 treated fans to another yet exciting match when India maintained an undefeated streak and won their seventh consecutive match by defeating Sri Lanka in their recent face-off. The match saw Team India display exceptional prowess, securing a resounding victory by a massive margin of 302 runs.

Although there was much to celebrate in the match, India’s star batter Shreyas Iyer‘s dismissal on 82 runs left many fans, including the famous Bollywood actress Athiya Shetty, visibly disappointed.

Shreyas Iyer’s remarkable innings

The match at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium had all eyes on local boy Shreyas, who was yet to find his rhythm in the tournament. The right-handed batter lived up to the expectations and played a crucial role in bolstering India’s innings, contributing a blazing 82 runs from just 56 deliveries. However, he couldn’t reach the three figures and missed out on a well-deserved century after attempting a big shot off Dilshan Madushanka‘s delivery.

The excitement in the crowd was palpable as Iyer aimed to dispatch the ball from Madushanka high into the stands for a six. Athiya, wife of Indian cricketer KL Rahul, couldn’t contain her joy as the ball left the bat. Nevertheless, as the delivery resulted in Iyer’s dismissal and he was caught, Athiya’s elation quickly turned into disappointment. Her candid reaction, captured by cameras, quickly went viral on the internet.

The Match Overview

Asked to bat first, India’s journey in this match had an early hiccup when they lost their skipper, Rohit Sharma, on just the second ball. However, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli formed a remarkable partnership that laid the foundation for India’s commanding total. Iyer’s explosive innings provided valuable momentum to the team. On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka stood out with a brilliant five-wicket haul.

In response to India’s imposing target, the Sri Lankan batters struggled immensely against the relentless Indian bowlers. The entire Sri Lankan team was bowled out for a mere 55 runs in 19.4 overs. The star of the Indian bowling attack, Mohammed Shami, picked up five crucial wickets, while Mohammed Siraj contributed with three important dismissals.

India’s ODI World Cup 2023 campaign

With this victory, India has now sealed its spot in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023. The team’s exceptional performances have kept their hopes high, and the remaining two matches in the tournament are unlikely to alter their semi-final prospects.
