In a one-sided encounter at the iconic Eden Gardens, the 37th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 witnessed India completely thrashed South Africa to continue their unbeaten run. The toss was won by India, who elected to bat first, setting the stage for an exciting showdown.
Virat Kohli’s 49th century take India to a big total
India’s top-order batters set the tone for a formidable total. The opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a solid start, with Rohit Sharma contributing a quick 40 runs off 24 balls, featuring 6 fours and 2 sixes. Virat Kohli led the way with a magnificent century, scoring 101 runs from 121 deliveries, anchoring the innings. Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role with 77 runs off 87 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja provided a late flourish with 29 runs off 15 balls. India posted a challenging total of 326/5 in their allotted 50 overs.
The South African bowlers tried their best to restrict India’s scoring, with Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi picking up a wicket each. Ngidi was the most economical bowler, finishing with figures of 1 wicket for 63 runs.

In response, South Africa faced a daunting target of 327 runs. However, they struggled to establish partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals. Ravindra Jadeja was the star with the ball, picking up an incredible 5 wickets for just 33 runs in his 9-over spell. Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav also contributed with crucial wickets.
The match concluded with India delivering a dominant performance, winning by a massive margin of 243 runs. Look, all this world cup malarkey is quite fun. But the contest that really matters is between the hairdos of the Ravindras. Difficult to pick a winner between Rachin and Jadeja but I *think* Rachin is slightly ahead thanks to the extra volume. My decision is final.
