The ODI World Cup 2023 final between cricket powerhouses India and Australia left fans on the edge of their seats as the Aussies secured a convincing 6-wicket victory, claiming their overall 6th World Cup trophy. Despite India’s dominant performance in the league stage and semifinal, the summit clash saw a remarkable turnaround in favor of Australia.

Dominance in league stage versus final outcome

Rohit Sharma‘s Indian team showcased exceptional form throughout the league stage, remaining undefeated and securing their place in the final as the first team. However, the final proved to be a different story as they faced a 6-wicket defeat, relinquishing the World Cup trophy to Australia.

In contrast, Australia faced early setbacks, losing their first two games convincingly. However, a pivotal moment occurred mid-way through the first innings against Sri Lanka, leading to a spectacular turnaround for Pat Cummins‘ led side. Australia went on an impressive winning streak, claiming the trophy with nine consecutive victories.

Mohammad Kaif’s remark

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif stirred controversy when he expressed his disbelief that the best team did not win the World Cup. Kaif asserted, “I can never accept that the best team has won the world cup. The Indian team is the best team on paper,” during a discussion on Star Sports.

David Warner’s retort

David Warner, the Australian opener, wasted no time in responding to Kaif’s statement. Warner emphasized the significance of performance on the given day, stating, “I like MK, the issue is it does not matter what’s on paper. At the end of the day, you need to perform when it matters. That’s why they call it a final. That’s the day that counts, and it can go either way, that’s sports. 2027 here we come,” in a tweet on his official Twitter account.
