In a surprising move just a day before the IPL 2024 auction, Joe Root, the prolific batter from England and Rajasthan Royals (RR), has opted out of the upcoming season, as confirmed by the franchise on Saturday night.
Kumar Sangakkara has his say on Joe Root’s decision
In an official statement on their website, the Jaipur-based franchise expressed their respect for Root’s decision. Kumar Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket for RR, acknowledged Root’s positive impact on the team and his influential presence in a short period.
“During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024,” stated Sangakkara. “Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him. His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does,” the Sri Lankan veteran added.

Root becomes second England cricketer to pull out of IPL 2024
Root, acquired by Royals in the IPL 2023 auction for a base price of INR 1 crore, played three games in the IPL 2023 season, with limited opportunities to showcase his batting prowess.
The 32-year-old’s addition to the Royals’ squad provided depth and experience, influencing the growth of younger players like Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Root’s camaraderie with fellow England teammate Jos Buttler and bonding with India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal were highlighted as memorable aspects of his stint with the Royals.
Root’s decision to withdraw from the IPL 2024 season follows his Test captain, Ben Stokes, making a similar choice, marking a second England player to step back from the upcoming tournament. The IPL 2024 auction, now poised to be more intriguing with Root’s unexpected departure, is awaited by fans and franchises alike.
