As the deadline for retention and trading in the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches its closure, there has been a sudden surge in activity among franchises. The latest development involves a trade between two southern powerhouses, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Sunrisers Hyderabad acquires Shahbaz Ahmed in exchange for Mayank Dagar

An official IPL Media advisory on Sunday morning confirmed that Sunrisers have traded Mayank Dagar to the Challengers in exchange for all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed. Dagar, who was acquired by SRH for INR 1.8 crore last year, is now part of the RCB roster, while Shahbaz, secured by RCB in the 2022 auction for INR 2.4 crore, will don the SunRisers’ colors in the upcoming season.

Player performance overview

Dagar played three games for SRH in the previous season without making significant contributions. In contrast, Shahbaz featured in 10 matches for RCB, with modest success. Shahbaz boasts a total of 39 IPL appearances with 14 wickets to his name and a best bowling figure of 3/7.

Noteworthy stats and international presence

Shahbaz has also represented India in three ODIs and two T20Is. His standout IPL performance was in 2022, where he scored 219 runs in 16 matches at an average of over 27 and claimed four wickets. In 81 T20 games, Shahbaz has accumulated 834 runs at an average of 22.54, showcasing his all-round capabilities with both bat and ball.

New management for both franchises

As the teams gear up for the 2024 season, both SRH and RCB will have new leadership at the helm. RCB, who narrowly missed the playoffs last season, finishing sixth with seven wins in 14 matches, will be led by new head coach Andy Flower. SRH, on the other hand, concluded the previous season at the bottom with just four wins in 14 games and will see New Zealand legend Daniel Vettori take charge as their head coach.
