Cricket Australia (CA) are currently in the search for a new captain for the Australian Women’s cricket team, following the sudden retirement of Meg Lanning last month. With the team set to embark on a multi-format series in India starting on December 21, the country’s cricket board is expected to make an official announcement next month after a crucial meeting.

Ellyse Perry nominates veteran stumper as the ideal leader

In the midst of this uncertainty, star all-rounder Ellyse Perry, a seasoned campaigner in the Australian squad, has expressed her choice for the new captain. Perry, however, has made it clear that she has no interest in taking on the role herself. Instead, she has named veteran wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy as her preferred candidate.

“Obviously Midge [Healy] has done that job a number of times across the last 18 months, and she’s done a great job with that,” Perry stated in an interview with ABC news.

Confidence in the leadership skills

Perry emphasized the wealth of talent and leadership within the Australian team and threw her support behind Healy for the captaincy.

“We have a strong leadership group with some really experienced players in our team. So my assumption would be that Midge will carry on doing it, but I don’t have any further insight than that,” Perry remarked.

With the evolving landscape in women’s cricket and increased competition from various nations, Perry sees Healy’s potential to lead the team effectively.

“The landscape has changed quite rapidly because we’ve got some really great challenges from quite a few countries. So the way we want to take our game forward has coincided with Midge leading the ship. I think that’s presented a great opportunity for her and the group to look at things freshly and almost have a blank canvas to start working off,” explained Perry.
