In the lead-up to the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, all 10 franchises have made strategic decisions on player retention and release, with an eye on optimizing their budgets for the upcoming season.
From a hefty acquisition to release
One notable name in the list of released players is England’s Harry Brook, who commanded a significant price tag of INR 13.25 crore when he was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). His inclusion in the SRH squad raised eyebrows, given his impressive form for England leading up to the 2023 IPL auctions.
Brook made a strong start in the tournament, delivering a standout performance with a century at the iconic Eden Gardens. However, his subsequent performances failed to live up to the expectations, resulting in a total of only 190 runs across 11 matches in the 2023 edition.
On the retention day deadline, Sunrisers made the decision to release Brook from their squad. The move allows the franchise to potentially reacquire him at a more economical price during the IPL 2024 auction.

The road ahead
As the IPL 2024 auction looms on the horizon, scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 19, 2023, Brook finds himself back in the pool of players up for grabs. With Sunrisers holding a remaining purse of INR 34 crore, speculation arises regarding the possibility of Brook’s return to the SRH fold at a potentially more modest price.
