India have been dealt a severe blow in its preparations for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa as all-rounder Deepak Chahar is likely to miss the three-match T20I series and the subsequent three-game ODI series.

Personal Emergency for Deepak Chahar

According to The Times of India report, the setback is attributed to a personal emergency involving Chahar’s father, who was admitted to a hospital in Aligarh due to a brain stroke and other health issues on December 2.

Chahar’s father, Lokendrasingh, faced health complications, leading to his hospitalization in Aligarh. Chahar, who was part of the Indian squad and set to play in the fifth T20I against Australia on December 3, rushed from Bengaluru to be by his father’s side, eventually missing the last game.

Communication with team management: Chahar informs Rahul Dravid and selectors of his Decision

Chahar expressed his intention to prioritize his family during this challenging time and informed Team India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, and the selectors about his decision.

“We got him to the hospital on time. Else, it could have been dangerous. His condition is better at the moment. People were asking, why I didn’t play the final T20I against Australia. For me, my father is very important. He made me the player I am. I cannot leave him in this condition and couldn’t go anywhere,” Chahar said.

“That’s why I am staying with my father and once he is out of danger, I will start my journey to South Africa. I have talked to Rahul (Dravid) sir and the selectors. Right now, my father’s condition is better,” the 31-year-old concluded.

Impact on India’s white-ball Campaign

The potential absence of Chahar, a key contributor as an all-rounder, could impact India’s strategy and balance in the white-ball series against the Proteas. The team management will need to make adjustments to cope with this unexpected development.

The white-ball series between India and South Africa comprises three ODIs and three T20Is, scheduled to begin on December 10 and conclude on December 21. Following the limited-overs leg, the teams will engage in a two-Test series, set to take place from December 26 to January 7.
