In a spectacular display of batting prowess, young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal recently etched his name in the cricket record books by equalling the legendary Pakistan fast-bowler Wasim Akram‘s record for hitting the most sixes in an innings in Test cricket. The remarkable feat unfolded during the third Test between India and England in Rajkot, where the 22-year-old left-handed batter played an extraordinary knock of an unbeaten 214 runs, contributing significantly to the hosts’ colossal 434-run victory.

Wasim Akram’s humorous comment

During his record-breaking innings, Jaiswal unleashed an impressive onslaught, smashing a total of 12 sixes in the second innings of the Rajkot Test. This achievement brought him on par with Akram, who had set the record by hitting twelve sixes during his marathon knock of 257 runs in a 1996 Test match against Zimbabwe in Sheikhupura.

Speaking to A Sports, Akram, in good spirits, cheekily mentioned that Jaiswal hadn’t broken his record but had successfully equalled it. He also emphasized the challenging nature of the Zimbabwe team during his era and highlighted that the conditions in which he scored his double century were far from easy.

“My record (most sixes in an innings) wasn’t broken, it’s been equalled by Yashasvi Jaiswal. People talk a lot that it was Zimbabwe, but it wasn’t that easy. I remember we were around 170/6 when I went to bat,” Akram said.

Yashasvi Jaiswal significant strides

Notably, Jaiswal has emerged as the leading run-scorer in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. His outstanding performances include accumulating 545 runs in three Tests at an impressive average of 101. Following his remarkable showing, Jaiswal made significant strides in the ICC Test rankings, ascending 14 spots to secure the 15th position. His notable contributions included a score of 209 in the Visakhapatnam Test, followed by the memorable unbeaten 214-run knock that played a pivotal role in India’s historic win in Rajkot.
