In a significant setback for the Gujarat Titans ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the franchise has been dealt a major blow with the exclusion of stalwart seamer Mohammed Shami from their squad. Being a vital and integral part of the Titans’ bowling lineup, Shami has been ruled out for the forthcoming IPL season.
The absence of Shami, known for his ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs and maintain control in pressure situations, leaves a notable void in the Titans’ lineup, necessitating swift and strategic adjustments by the team management as they prepare for the upcoming IPL campaign.
Reason behind Mohammed Shami’s withdrawal from IPL 2024
Shami’s exclusion from the IPL 2024 results from a left ankle injury, compelling the 33-year-old to undergo surgery in the UK. Having travelled to London in the final week of January, he initially sought relief through special ankle injections. However, the injections proved ineffective despite the plan to resume light running after three weeks. Consequently, surgery is the only viable option for the cricketer, prompting him to make imminent arrangements for the medical procedure in the UK.
“Shami was in London in last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon. But the injection hasn’t worked and now the only option left is surgery. He will shortly leave for UK for surgery. IPL seems out of question,” a BCCI source said as quoted by PTI.

Shami’s last stint in national colours
Shami’s noteworthy stint in the ODI World Cup 2023, where he played a pivotal role in India’s campaign by securing an impressive 24 wickets in seven games, marked a high point in his recent cricketing journey. However, the spirited pacer faced challenges following the tournament as he grappled with a persistent knee injury.
Regrettably, this physical setback has hindered his return to the national team since then. The repercussions of this injury have become evident in the ongoing test series against England, where the Amroha-born cricketer found himself excluded from the Indian squad.
