In a disappointing turn of events, the Mumbai Indians (MI) faced their third consecutive defeat in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, falling to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. Despite their fervent efforts, MI couldn’t secure a win in their first home game of the season, succumbing to a six-wicket loss against the Royals.
Scare amidst the game
A moment of alarm arose during the match when a fan breached security to approach superstar Rohit Sharma. The former MI captain appeared visibly startled as the individual made his way towards him, eventually embracing him before engaging with Ishan Kishan. Prompt intervention by security personnel swiftly resolved the situation, ensuring the safety of the players.

Match recap
Choosing to bowl first, the Rajasthan Royals effectively contained MI to a modest total of 125/9. In reply, the Royals comfortably chased down the target with 27 balls to spare, thanks largely to Riyan Parag‘s unbeaten half-century.
The Royals’ bowling attack, led by veteran pacer Trent Boult (3/22) and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (3/11), stifled MI’s batting order. Chahal’s crucial dismissal of MI skipper Pandya halted MI’s momentum, while Boult’s early breakthroughs set the tone for the Royals’ dominance.
Rohit Sharma’s duck dismay
Adding to MI’s woes, Rohit’s struggles continued as he suffered another duck, equalling the record for the most ducks in the cash-rich league. Falling victim to Boult in the first over, Rohit’s dismissal marked his 17th duck in IPL history, aligning him with Dinesh Karthik in the unwanted record.
“Yes, a tough night, we didn’t start the way we wanted to start. I wanted to counter, we were in a decent position to get us around 150-160, but my wicket allowed them to get back more into the game, I needed to do a lot more,” said Pandya after the game.
