Piyush Chawla showcased his bowling prowess in Match 55 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, wreaking havoc for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday (May 6).
Opting to bat first, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head provided a steady start in the powerplay, with Head particularly aggressive, scoring a brisk 48 off 30 balls. However, the tide turned when MI’s bowlers, led by spinner Piyush Chawla, intervened. Chawla’s spell saw SRH losing wickets at regular intervals after the decent start.
Piyush Chawla’s bowling masterclass
Chawla’s first breakthrough came on the third delivery of the eleventh over when he dismissed the dangerous Travis Head. Delivering a tossed-up delivery on the leg stump, Chawla enticed Head into attempting a sweep shot. Nevertheless, Head failed to connect cleanly, resulting in a straightforward catch for Tilak Varma at deep backward square.

Crucial wicket of Heinrich Klaasen
In his subsequent over, Chawla continued his impressive spell by claiming another crucial wicket. This time, his victim was Heinrich Klaasen, who attempted to take on the spinner by playing across the line to a quicker googly delivered by Chawla. Nonetheless, Klaasen’s intentions were foiled as he only managed to get an inside edge onto the stumps, resulting in the timber being disturbed and sending the batsman back to the pavilion.
