In the 55th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. SRH, after being asked to bat first, registered a total of 173 for 8 wickets.
During the chase, MI batter Suryakumar Yadav played a magnificent innings, scoring an unbeaten 102 runs off 51 balls. Yadav’s innings included 12 fours and six sixes, while he also shared an unbroken 143-run partnership with Tilak Varma (37* off 32). This stand helped MI recover from a shaky start of 31 for 3. Despite their impressive win, MI find themselves with only a slim chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
Mumbai Indians’ position in the points table
MI are currently placed at 9th position in the team standings, with 8 points in their bag at a concerning net run rate (NRR) of -0.212. As their NRR is very low, MI is placed below Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), even though all these teams have the same points in the table.
Playoffs qualification scenario for MI
To secure a place in the top four teams during the league stage, MI must win all their remaining matches by a significant margin. This would see them finish with 12 points. However, even with this, MI’s chances of qualification would remain slim, as they would still need favourable outcomes from other teams’ matches to achieve their goal.
Reliability on other teams
At present, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and SRH have accumulated 12 points each. For Mumbai Indians (MI) to secure a playoff spot, they will need at least two of these teams to lose all their remaining matches. Additionally, MI will want Delhi Capitals (DC) to win just one game out of their next three fixtures while also hoping that Gujarat Titans (GT) and RCB finish the league stage with not more than 12 points. This scenario would result in multiple teams ending with 12 points, and NRR would determine the fourth position in the standings.
