In a dramatic turn of events during the 61st match of IPL 2024 between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was given out obstructing the field, sparking controversy and heated debate.
Ravindra Jadeja’s bizarre dismissal against Rajasthan Royals
The match, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, witnessed the incident unfold during the 15th over of the CSK innings. Avesh Khan, bowling for RR, delivered a short-of-length delivery to Jadeja, who attempted to dab it to third man. However, a miscommunication between Jadeja and his batting partner resulted in Jadeja being halfway down the pitch for a second run, while his partner wasn’t keen.
As the throw from third man came in, RR wicketkeeper Sanju Samson threw it at the stumps. In the midway, Sanju’s throw hit Jadeja, prompting an appeal from the RR players. After consulting with the third umpire, Jadeja was given out obstructing the field. The decision was based on the umpire’s view that Jadeja deliberately changed direction to block the throw, despite appearing to take a natural angle while turning back.

Despite Jadeja’s polite enquiry with the umpire and his disbelief at seeing the giant screen display “OUT,” he eventually walked off the field.
CSK beat RR by 5 wickets
RR finished their innings with a score of 141-5 after 20 overs, with Riyan Parag leading the charge with an unbeaten 47 runs. Simarjeet Singh‘s impressive bowling performance for CSK saw him take 3 wickets, limiting RR’s scoring opportunities.
In reply, CSK successfully chased down the target of 142 runs in 18.2 overs, with Ruturaj Gaikwad playing a pivotal role with an unbeaten 42 runs. Contributions from Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell also proved crucial in CSK’s victory. This win keeps CSK in contention for the playoffs.
RR spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal put up a commendable effort, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for their team.
