Since their triumphant victory in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, India have been longing to secure another major ICC trophy. Despite numerous strong performances and near misses, they have been unable to replicate the success of their past glories. The absence of a significant title win has left Indian cricket supporters eagerly awaiting a moment of triumph on the global stage, especially as the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches.

Inaugural triumph and subsequent setbacks

India’s journey in the T20 World Cup has been a mix of glory and frustration. Their remarkable victory in the inaugural tournament in 2007, led by the legendary MS Dhoni, remains a cherished memory for fans. However, despite early success, subsequent editions of the tournament have brought disappointment.

India’s quest for another title has been marked by close calls and missed opportunities, with the team falling short of clinching the trophy. The most recent edition of the T20 World Cup, held in Australia in 2022, ended in disappointment for India. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the team suffered a crushing defeat against England in the semifinals, losing by ten wickets.

Cast doubt on India’s potential

Now former England cricketer David Lloyd has cast doubt on India’s potential as a threatening force in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Speaking on TalkSport Cricket Podcast he expressed skepticism about India’s impact in the tournament, citing their perceived predictability and risk-free approach. While acknowledging the presence of quality players in the Indian squad, Lloyd believed that their playing style might not unsettle their opponents, implying that India’s strategy could lack dynamism and surprise factor.

“(It is) quite a predictable team. The shackles are not off. I would think the opposition accept the quality.. yeah, good players these. But they ain’t taking a risk with bat or ball. So, you’d think of them as ‘Yeah, they will have their moments,’ but they wouldn’t be really threatening,” Lloyd said.

Composition of Team India for T20 World cup 2024

Meanwhile for this edition, Rohit will continue to lead the team, with Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal as top-order batter. Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya form the middle order, while Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are the keeper-batters. Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel offer spin options, supported by Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj handle pace. India will start their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5, followed by a much-anticipated clash against Pakistan in New York on June 9.
