As the cricketing world gears up for the T20 World Cup 2024, anticipation and excitement are reaching fever pitch. The tournament, which will be held in the United States and the West Indies, promises to deliver thrilling matches and showcase the talents of the world’s best cricketers. This year’s edition, like those before it, is expected to offer plenty of surprises and memorable performances.

Underdog teams: A tradition of surprising performances

In every edition of ICC events, fans are treated to the unexpected thrill of underdog teams punching above their weight. These surprise performances add an extra layer of excitement to the tournament, as lesser-known teams challenge the established cricketing nations. This edition of the exciting tournament is expected to be no different, with several teams poised to make their mark on the global stage.

Adam Gilchrist picks the potential giant killers

Legendary wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has made a bold prediction ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. Speaking on SEN Radio, Gilchrist identified Nepal and the Netherlands as two teams capable of causing upsets against more established sides.

Nepal: A team on the rise

Gilchrist highlighted the rapid progress of the Nepal cricket team under the leadership of Rohit Paudel. He emphasized the presence of young Nepalese players who have gained valuable experience in major cricket leagues around the world. However, Nepal faces a significant setback with the absence of star leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, who was denied a visa for the US, thus missing out on the tournament.

“I think Nepal would be a team that might be able to fire a shot. They’ve got a couple of young players who have been in all the big leagues for a number of years now,” said Gilchrist.

Netherlands: Perennial feather rufflers

Gilchrist also pointed to the Netherlands as a team that has historically managed to upset stronger opponents. Recalling their stunning victory over South Africa in the 2022 T20 World Cup, he remarked, “The Dutch always seem to ruffle a few feathers, they always seem to get under the skin, and they’re drawn in the same pool as South Africa again. They nailed them in the T20 World Cup last time in Australia in Adelaide. So, it might be the Dutch.”

This past success, combined with their tenacity and experience in the T20 format, positions the Netherlands as a formidable opponent capable of springing surprises once more.

The broader impact

Gilchrist further commented on the broader impact of these up-and-coming teams. He emphasized the significant advantages for emerging cricket nations participating in the T20 World Cup. The former Aussie opener explained that these teams benefit financially by receiving a share of the tournament’s revenue, which helps support and grow their cricket programs.

Additionally, the experience of competing against top teams in a global event provides invaluable exposure and learning opportunities. Gilchrist pointed out that the T20 format, with its unpredictable and fast-paced nature, offers these nations a platform to challenge more established teams, potentially causing upsets and gaining recognition.

“That’s in a financial component where they get a little bit of a lick of the ice cream… but also just the experience. With the T20 format, that’s the opportunity for these nations to come in and start trying to ruffle a few feathers but also bed down the cricket programs in their countries,” added Gilchrist.
