England have revealed their playing XI for the first Test match against the West Indies, set to commence at Lord’s on Wednesday, July 10. This lineup features a mix of seasoned players and exciting new talent.

Notable inclusions and debuts

Spinner Shoaib Bashir is set to feature in his first Test match in England, having made his debut earlier this year in India. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith will both make their Test debuts, adding fresh faces to the team.

Fast bowler Chris Woakes returns to the Test arena for the first time since the 2023 Ashes series against Australia. Woakes’ inclusion bolsters England’s pace attack with his experience and skill.

James Anderson’s farewell Test

Seamer James Anderson, who announced his international retirement in May this year, will be playing his last Test match at Lord’s. Anderson, a legendary figure in English cricket, is expected to transition into a coaching role with the England team following his retirement.

During a press conference at Lord’s, Anderson revealed a composed demeanour heading into his final Test match. The veteran pacer downplayed any pre-match jitters, stating his primary focus is on securing a victory for England. He acknowledged that emotions might intensify as the week progresses, but for now, his mind is set on contributing to a winning performance.

“I feel pretty normal going into this last couple of days of training. Try not to think too much about the game itself. The big thing for me this week is to play well, bowl well and get a win. That’s what I am trying to focus on really. I am sure the emotions during the week will change. So that’s what I am trying to focus on to stop myself from crying,” said Anderson.

As England gears up for the three-match series opener, fans will be eagerly watching to see how the new and returning players perform. The historic Lord’s Cricket Ground will also provide a fitting backdrop for Anderson’s farewell, marking the end of an illustrious career.
