Rahul Dravid, the former head coach of the Indian cricket team, has long been celebrated for his gentlemanly conduct both on and off the field. His humility, integrity, and sportsmanship have earned him immense respect in the cricketing world. Dravid’s latest gesture further cements his reputation as a person of fine character and principles.
Rahul Dravid’s selfless decision regarding prize money
In a move that exemplifies his commendable character, Dravid decided to forgo half of the INR 5 crore prize money allocated to him from the INR 125 crore pool announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team. Dravid chose to let go of INR 2.5 crore of his reward, setting another fine example of selflessness and humility.
BCCI’s announcement of cash reward
Notably, following the Indian team’s victory over South Africa in the final to clinch the T20 World Cup title, the BCCI announced a total cash reward of INR 125 crore for the team, coaching staff, and support staff. Out of this pool, the head coach Dravid was set to receive INR 5 crore, while other coaches on the team, including the batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, were each allocated INR 2.5 crore.
Reason behind Dravid’s request to reduce his cash reward
According to a report by Hindustan Times, Dravid requested the BCCI to reduce his cash reward to INR 2.5 crore, the same amount as the other coaches. He expressed that he did not want to receive more money than his colleagues, including bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore.
“Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs. 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff. We respect his sentiments,” a BCCI source said, as per the report.
Dravid’s decision highlights his commitment to equality and fairness, further enhancing his legacy as a true sportsman and a remarkable individual.
