UAE frontrunner to host Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, BCB requests more time
Women's T20 World Cup

The race to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 has intensified, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerging as a strong contender following the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declining to host the tournament. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), however, is seeking additional time to finalize its plans to retain hosting rights amid ongoing challenges.

UAE steps in as potential host

The ICC is under pressure to finalize the host nation for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin with warm-up matches on September 27, followed by the main event from October 3 to 20. The UAE, particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, stands out due to its world-class cricket infrastructure and favourable weather conditions, making it a viable alternative to Bangladesh, which has faced security concerns and logistical challenges.

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has expressed its eagerness to host the event, aligning with the ICC’s requirements for a country with a similar time zone to Bangladesh. This has positioned the UAE as a frontrunner, especially as other potential hosts like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka also show interest.

BCB seeks more time

Despite the UAE’s strong bid, the BCB is not ready to concede. As per the reports, the BCB has requested for an extension of five days from the ICC to finalize their hosting plans. The board is optimistic about meeting the ICC’s criteria, which includes security assurances and logistical support. Notably, the BCB has been in communication with the Army Chief regarding security measures, especially in light of recent unrest that has seen several board officials, including President Nazmul Hassan, leave the country.

The ICC had initially aimed to make a decision by August 15, but the BCB’s request for more time means that a final determination may come during an online meeting scheduled for August 20. This meeting will primarily address other agenda items, but a decision on the Women’s T20 World Cup could also be made.
