Orla Prendergast‘s superb century powered Ireland Women to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka Women in the 1st ODI of the Sri Lanka Women tour of Ireland 2024 at the Civil Service Cricket Club, Stormont. Chasing a challenging target of 261, Ireland secured the win in the final over, with Prendergast’s heroic knock leading the way.

Vishmi Gunaratne powers Sri Lanka to a formidable total

After opting to bowl first, Ireland Women faced a resilient Sri Lankan batting lineup. Despite the early dismissal of captain Chamari Athapaththu for a golden duck, Sri Lanka’s Vishmi Rajapaksha Gunaratne anchored the innings with a splendid 101 off 98 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes.

Hasini Perera provided valuable support with 46 runs off 72 balls, helping Sri Lanka post a competitive total of 260/8 in their 50 overs. For Ireland, Prendergast was outstanding with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for just 25 runs, while Alana Dalzell also contributed with two key wickets.

Orla Prendergast takes Ireland home in a thrilling finish

In pursuit of 261, Ireland had a shaky start, losing Gaby Lewis early. However, Sarah Forbes (30 off 46 balls) and Amy Hunter (42 off 45 balls) built a solid foundation. The innings was then taken over by Prendergast, who played a match-winning knock of 122 off 107 balls, laced with 10 fours and 2 sixes. Her powerful stroke play and calm presence at the crease put Ireland in control of the chase. Despite some late wickets, Prendergast’s heroics ensured Ireland reached the target, finishing on 261/7 in 49.2 overs.

Sri Lanka’s bowling attack was led by Kavisha Dilhari, who claimed 4 wickets for 54 runs, but their efforts weren’t enough to prevent Ireland from claiming victory in the opening match of the series. Prendergast’s all-round brilliance earned her the Player of the Match award, as her exceptional century guided Ireland Women to a 1-0 lead in the series.
