Karun Nair, the once-promising Indian batter who shot to fame with a triple century against England in 2016, has not donned the whites since then. However, his passion for Test cricket remains undimmed. In a recent interview, Nair expressed his unwavering determination to make a comeback to the highest level of the game.
Karun Nair’s resurgent form
Nair striking the ball well in the Maharaja League 2024, can also be termed as the man in form scoring a ton of just 43 balls for his local franchise Mysore Warriors. His confidence is sky-high at the moment, as he believes he is batting better than ever before.
“I feel like I’m batting as well as I’ve ever done. I am in a good head space, I know where my game is. I am just making sure if I get opportunities, wherever it may be, the focus is on making the most of those chances so that I can climb up the stairs again,” Nair stated in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
Nair dreaming of a Test comeback
The dream of playing Test cricket again serves as Nair’s driving force. He wakes up every morning with the hope of finding a way back into the national team. The middle-order batter’s ambitions extend beyond individual glory, as he also aims to contribute to his team’s success.
“It’s still exciting to wake up each morning and dream of finding a way back to play Test cricket. That keeps me going. I would love to win trophies; we missed out on the Ranji last year. I will try to correct it this year,” he added.

A consistent performer
Nair’s recent form has been impressive, as he has consistently scored runs across different formats. In the Ranji Trophy, he scored 690 runs, leading Vidarbha to the final. In T20s, he played some fine knocks, including an unbeaten 95 off 52 balls that helped Vidarbha pull off their highest successful run-chase in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy versus Bengal. Nair also registered a century and a half-century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
In the end, Nair’s path back to Test cricket is likely to be challenging. He faces stiff competition from a talented pool of Indian batters. However, his recent form and unwavering determination suggest that he has the potential to make a strong case for selection. Nair’s journey will be one to watch, as he continues to pursue his dream of representing India in Test cricket once again.
