The Chennai Test between India and Bangladesh was filled with exciting cricket, from India’s dominant batting performance to their impressive bowling display. However, amidst the intense competition, a light-hearted moment unfolded that caught the attention of fans and commentators alike.
Rishabh Pant’s unconventional coaching
On Day 3 of the Test, Rishabh Pant, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, displayed his unique coaching skills when he offered advice to Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto about the field placement. As Pant prepared to face the bowler, he noticed a gap in the field on the leg side and immediately pointed it out to Shanto.
“Hey, put a fielder here. There aren’t many fielders here,” Pant said to Shanto, gesturing towards the vacant area. Surprisingly, Shanto followed Pant’s suggestion and deployed a fielder in the midwicket region.
This incident brought back memories of a similar situation during the 2019 ODI World Cup when MS Dhoni, Pant’s predecessor in the white-ball formats, advised Bangladesh all-rounder Sabbir Rahman to reposition the square-leg fielder. Like Shanto, Sabbir also followed Dhoni’s advice without hesitation.

India’s dominance continues in the Chennai Test
Beyond the humorous incident, India continued to dominate the match. Their strong first-innings total and impressive bowling performance put Bangladesh on the back foot. On Day 3, Shubman Gill and Pant showcased their batting prowess, further demoralizing the visitors with their centuries.
Despite a promising start to the match, Bangladesh’s batting struggled throughout the Test. Their top order failed to deliver, and they were unable to capitalize on the early wickets they managed to take. India’s bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, proved too much for the visitors.
The Chennai Test was a memorable affair, not just for the cricket but also for the unexpected moments that unfolded. Pant’s quirky coaching advice and the similarities to Dhoni’s actions added a touch of humour to an otherwise intense match. As India continued their dominance, it was clear that they were well on their way to a comfortable victory.
