Veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has provided his perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding the comparison between Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni as India’s best Test wicketkeeper-batter. While acknowledging the potential greatness of Pant, Karthik urged caution in making hasty conclusions about his legacy, especially in comparison to Dhoni’s illustrious career.

Karthik was quick to emphasize that while Pant has shown immense potential in his young career, but it’s too early to label him as the greatest Indian wicketkeeper-batter. Pant, who has played 34 Test matches so far, has become a central figure in India’s Test lineup. However, Karthik suggested a more measured approach when assessing Pant’s future in Test cricket.

“It’s very unacceptable to say that he’s played 34 Tests and he’s already India’s greatest wicketkeeper-batter. Let’s take time, let’s not jump to conclusions, but he’s on course for sure, and he will finish as India’s greatest-ever wicketkeeper,” Karthik said in an interview with Cricbuzz.

The former wicket-keeper also weighed in on Dhoni’s impact, both as a wicketkeeper and a leader. He highlighted Dhoni’s contributions not only behind the stumps but also his pivotal role as a batsman and captain. Karthik emphasized that Dhoni’s legacy goes beyond individual stats, particularly pointing to his ability to guide India to monumental achievements in Test cricket.

“Don’t discount Dhoni’s credentials as a wicketkeeper as well. He not only kept brilliantly, batted and scored runs when it mattered very, very well for India, but also led India to a World Test Championship mace, which is becoming number 1. So you’ve got to give all that weightage as well when you speak about a player all round,” the cricketer-turned-commentator added.

Pant’s remarkable century played a vital role in setting a challenging target for Bangladesh, helping India secure a resounding victory by 280 runs. His performance was a reminder of his match-winning ability, especially under pressure, and reinforced his importance to the Indian Test side.

Pant’s absence from international cricket due to his accident was a significant blow to India’s squad. His comeback in Test cricket was eagerly awaited, and the manner in which he returned – scoring a century – underscored his resilience and talent. It was an emphatic response to those who had doubts about his form and fitness after such a long break.
