In a significant move ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced the return of Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach. The return of Sri Lankan veteran
Jayawardene, a former Sri Lankan captain and one of cricket’s most respected figures, previously served as the head coach of Mumbai Indians from 2017 to 2022, leading the team to three IPL titles during his tenure. His experience and strategic acumen will be crucial as Mumbai looks to bounce back and reclaim their status as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
Replacing former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who had a two-year stint with the team, Jayawardene’s appointment is seen as a step towards revitalizing the squad. Jayawardene’s first task will be to finalize player retentions ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2025. Teams can retain a maximum of six players, which includes up to five capped players and two uncapped players. This strategic decision will be critical in shaping the team’s future direction.
