Prithvi Shaw has been dropped from Mumbai’s squad for their upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Tripura, reportedly due to disciplinary issues. Although the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has not provided an official reason, it is reported that the 24-year-old’s behaviour both on and off the field has frustrated the team management and selectors.

Shortly after news of his exclusion surfaced, Shaw posted a four-letter message on Instagram, stating, “Need a break thx,” followed by a smiling emoji. This post came just hours before reports confirmed his omission from the squad.

Media reports suggest that Shaw’s exclusion stems from concerns over his commitment to fitness and practice. The team management, including captain Ajinkya Rahane and head coach Omkar Salvi, were said to be dissatisfied with his attitude towards net practice, where Shaw has been either skipping sessions or not taking them seriously. While top players like Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur have been consistently attending and working hard in the nets, Shaw has reportedly been getting out cheaply and failing to put in sufficient effort.

Shaw’s fitness has also been a cause for concern. According to reports, he was deemed overweight by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) trainers, who found that his body contained 35 percent fat. As a result, he has been asked to follow a two-week fitness program prepared by the MCA.

Shaw’s struggle with the bat

Shaw, who made his India Test debut against the West Indies in Rajkot in 2018, has seen his career decline due to off-field issues. In the two Ranji Trophy matches he has played this season, his scores have been underwhelming – 7 and 12 against Baroda, and 1 and 39 not out against Maharashtra.

As the right-handed batter aiming for a comeback to the national team through consistent performances in domestic cricket, Shaw’s recent form isn’t doing much to strengthen his case. He may also lose his place in the Delhi Capitals (DC) squad as the franchise is looking to retain only Rishabh Pant, Akshar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Abishek Porel among the Indian players.
