The first Test match between Bangladesh and South Africa at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium was a rollercoaster of emotions so far, highlighted by a moment of sheer chaos that left fans and players alike in disbelief. In a match already marked by dramatic turns, Hasan Mahmud‘s missed run-out attempt of Dane Piedt epitomized the unpredictability of cricket.
Hasan Mahmud throws the ball in a wrong direction
As the game unfolded on Day 2, South Africa were building a solid lead after Bangladesh’s dismal first innings total of just 106 runs. With South Africa at 227/8, Mahmud bowled a full toss to Piedt on last ball of the 69th over, who pushed it back towards the bowler. In an unexpected twist, Mahmud managed to deflect the ball onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Piedt, seemingly oblivious to the situation, charged down the pitch, only to realize that his partner Kyle Verreynne had not budged from his crease.
Mahmud seized the opportunity to throw the ball but instead hit Piedt on his left thigh. A direct hit could have seen Piedt short of his ground, but instead, it became a moment of comedy amidst tension. The crowd erupted with laughter and disbelief as Piedt managed to return safely to his crease.
