‘Thoda sa gyan apne future k lie bhi bacha lo’: Mohammed Shami fires back at Sanjay Manjrekar over IPL 2025 auction comments

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has openly criticized former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar for his remarks regarding Shami’s potential price tag in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. The controversy erupted after Manjrekar suggested that Shami’s injury history might deter franchises from bidding high for him, a comment that didn’t sit well with the experienced pacer.

The controversial comment made by Sanjay Manjrekar

During a discussion on Star Sports, Manjrekar highlighted Shami’s injury concerns, referencing his extended recovery period following a heel injury that kept him sidelined for nearly a year after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Manjrekar stated, “There will definitely be interest from teams, but given Shami’s injury history – and this recent one took a significant amount of time to recovery -there’s always a concern about a potential breakdown during the season.”

He further added, “If a franchise invests heavily and then loses him mid-season, their options become limited. This concern might lead to a drop in his price tag.”

Mohammed Shami’s fiery response

Shami, who has recently returned to competitive cricket by playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, wasted no time in hitting back at Manjrekar. The pacer took to his Instagram story, posting a sarcastic message:

“Baba ki jay hoooooo. Thodasa gyan apne future k lie bhi bacha loo kaam ayega Sanjay G? Kisi ko future janna ho to sir se mile (Salute to the wiseman. Sanjay ji, please save some of this advice for your own future? If someone wants to know about their future, don’t hesitate to get in touch with him).”

This statement, laced with wit and sarcasm, quickly gained attention on social media, with fans debating the merit of both sides.

Shami’s IPL legacy

Shami’s on-field performances stand in sharp contrast to concerns raised about his fitness. The pacer was bought by Gujarat Titans (GT) for ₹6.25 crore in the 2022 auction and proved to be an invaluable asset. Over two seasons, he picked up 48 wickets in 33 games, consistently delivering impactful performances.

In the 2023 IPL season, Shami’s exceptional form earned him the Purple Cap as the highest wicket-taker. He scalped 28 wickets in 17 innings, with a commendable average of 18.64 and an economy rate of 8.03. His ability to swing the ball effectively in the powerplay and execute precise yorkers in the death overs made him a key player for Gujarat.

Shami’s road to recovery

The injury that sidelined Shami for much of the 2024 season was a major setback, but his return to action in the Ranji Trophy has demonstrated his determination to bounce back. He is also set to participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Bengal as he builds toward a potential comeback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shami’s achievements and skills make him a valuable player for any IPL franchise. However, the question raised by Manjrekar – whether his fitness record might influence bidding dynamics – remains pertinent. With the IPL 2025 auction just days away, Shami’s proven track record and recent form are likely to attract interest, despite concerns over his durability.

In cricket, as in life, form is temporary, but class is permanent. For Shami, the auction could be an opportunity to reaffirm his value, both as a bowler and as a competitor who thrives under pressure.
