South Africa‘s fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka and the upcoming all-format series against Pakistan, scheduled from December 10 to January 7. The 24-year-old sustained a groin injury during the first Test against the Islanders, a setback that leaves the Proteas without one of their key pacers for the coming fixtures.

Groin injury ends Gerald Coetzee’s series

Coetzee experienced discomfort while bowling on the fourth day of the opening Test. Following scans, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed a right groin muscle strain. The expected recovery period of four to six weeks means Coetzee’s return to cricket will be delayed, with his availability for the SA20 league also under a cloud of uncertainty.

Coetzee, who is part of the Joburg Super Kings squad for the SA20, may miss their opening match against MI Cape Town on January 11. His absence is a significant blow to his franchise as well, given his impressive form in recent outings.

Uncapped pacer called up as replacement

To strengthen their bowling unit, South Africa have added pacer Kwena Maphaka to their squad for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha, starting December 5. The Proteas currently lead the two-match series 1-0 and will look to seal the series with a win in the final Test.

As South Africa prepare for a busy cricketing schedule, Coetzee’s absence will test their depth in the pace department, while Maphaka’s inclusion offers an opportunity to showcase his talent on the international stage.
