Women's Ashes 2025: Winners of the prestigious series

As the highly anticipated Women’s Ashes 2025 series approaches, cricket fans are eager to reflect on the historical context of this prestigious competition. The series, which features a multi-format structure, has seen intense rivalry between Australia and England since its inception.

Format of the Women’s Ashes

The Women’s Ashes differs from its men’s counterpart by incorporating all three formats of cricket: a single Test match, three T20 Internationals, and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs). This unique structure offers a more diverse and balanced competition.

The multi-format system was first introduced in the 2013 edition and has since been adopted for seven Women’s Ashes series. Each match contributes points toward the overall tally, with the team accumulating the most points declared the winner.

For the first time since the introduction of the multi-format setup, the Women’s Ashes is being played in a separate season from the men’s Ashes, marking a new chapter in the series’ history.

This format ensures that all three formats of the game are given importance, making the Women’s Ashes a dynamic and engaging contest.

Historical winners of the Women’s Ashes

To date, the Women’s Ashes have been contested in 25 editions, with Australia emerging victorious in 10 instances and England claiming the title 6 times. Notably, 9 series have ended in draws. The following is a summary of the recent multi-format series results:

  • 2013: England 12-4 Australia | Winner: England
  • 2014-15: Australia 8-10 England | Winner: England
  • 2015: England 6-10 Australia | Winner: Australia
  • 2017-18: Australia 8-8 England | Australia retain the Ashes
  • 2019: England 4-12 Australia | Winner: Australia
  • 2021-22: Australia 12-4 England | Winner: Australia
  • 2023: England 8-8 Australia | Australia retain the Ashes

The points system introduced in 2013 has added a new layer of excitement to the series, awarding points based on match outcomes across ODIs, T20Is and a Test match. A win in an ODI or T20I earns 2 points, while a Test win grants 4 points. If a match ends in a draw or has no result, both teams receive points accordingly.

Details of the upcoming series

The Women’s Ashes 2025 series is set to commence on January 11, 2025, at North Sydney Oval. It will consist of three ODIs, three T20Is, and a one-off Test match concluding on February 2, 2025, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). This year marks a significant occasion as it will be the first women’s Test at the MCG since 1949, celebrating the 90th anniversary of women’s Test cricket.
