The Hobart Hurricanes delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Sydney Thunder by six wickets in Match 29 of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 at Bellerive Oval. Hurricanes restricted the Thunder to a decent score, before chasing down the target with 19 balls to spare.

Sydney Thunder set a challenging target

Batting first, Sydney Thunder posted a competitive 164/6 in their 20 overs, anchored by a captain’s knock from David Warner. The veteran opener scored a brilliant 88 off 66 balls, laced with seven boundaries, showcasing his trademark precision and composure. Contributions from Sam Billings (28 off 15) and Oliver Davies (17 off 17) provided some late impetus to the innings.

The Hurricanes’ bowlers displayed mixed results, with Riley Meredith emerging as the standout performer, claiming 2 wickets for 30 runs in his full quota of four overs. Billy Stanlake (1/25) and Chris Jordan (1/24) were effective in stifling the Thunder’s scoring rate, while Nikhil Chaudhary chipped in with a crucial wicket during his solitary over.

Tim David’s heroics seal the deal for Hurricanes

Chasing 165, the Hobart Hurricanes began their innings with a flurry of quick runs. Although the top order contributed in bursts—Matthew Wade (13 off 5) and Mitchell Owen (13 off 6) provided a brisk start—it was Tim David’s exceptional knock that turned the game in the Hurricanes’ favor.

David hammered an unbeaten 68 off just 38 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and six towering sixes to dismantle the Thunder’s bowling attack. He found support in Nikhil Chaudhary (29 off 23) and Chris Jordan (18 off 13), who ensured the chase stayed on track. The Hurricanes reached the target in just 16.5 overs, securing their fourth win of the season.

The Thunder bowlers had an off day, with Mohammad Hasnain conceding 49 runs in his three overs. George Garton and Tom Andrews were the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets and one wicket, respectively, but their efforts proved insufficient to contain the Hurricanes’ aggressive batting lineup.
