The 37th match of Big Bash League (BBL)|14, between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder at the Sydney Cricket Ground, kept fans on the edge off their seats until rain prematurely ended the game. A standout moment occurred during Thunder’s innings, just before the rain interruption, when Sixers bowler Jack Edwards delivered a stunning yorker to dismiss Thunder opener Sam Konstas.

The moment came in the 4th over, Edwards bowled a pinpoint yorker to Konstas, who was caught off guard and failed to bring his bat down in time. The ball sneaked through, hitting the base of the middle stump, and Konstas was clean bowled. His dismissal was a crucial breakthrough for the Sixers, halting the Thunder’s momentum. Konstas walked off the field after contributing just 9 runs from 14 balls, which included 2 boundaries.

Match abandoned due to rain

Sydney Sixers won the toss and chose to bowl first, a decision that seemed to be paying off as they made early inroads, the Thunder had posted a score of 36/1 in 5.1 overs. Opening batter David Warner, in red-hot form this season, had been the key contributor, smashing 22* off just 14 balls, including 3 fours and a six. Warner’s aggressive start was the highlight of the Thunder’s innings until rain began to disrupt play.

After the first ball of the 6th over, the match was interrupted by heavy rain. Despite several inspections from the umpires, the incessant downpour showed no signs of relenting, and the game was ultimately abandoned. The disappointing end to what had been an exciting clash left fans at the SCG frustrated. The rain ruined what could have been a thrilling Sydney Smash, with both teams and spectators eagerly anticipating a fierce contest.

Playoffs scenario: Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder’s path to the finals

With the match being abandoned, both teams were awarded one point each, which impacted the standings in the BBL points table. The Sixers, currently second, have 14 points, while the Thunder sit just behind them in third place with 12 points. With only three matches remaining in the group stage, the race for the top spots is intensifying.

As things stand, the Sixers, occupying second place, are set to face the table-toppers, Hobart Hurricanes, in the Qualifier match of the tournament. On the other hand, the Thunder will compete in the knockout match, where they will face the team finishing in fourth place in the points table. Both teams will be looking to make the most of the remaining fixtures as they aim for a spot in the final and the ultimate BBL 14 title.
