India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma’s much-anticipated return to the domestic circuit was cut short by a cheap dismissal in the Ranji Trophy on January 23. Representing Mumbai, Rohit looked uncomfortable against Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umar Nazir Mir’s disciplined bowling. In the 6th over of the game, Rohit misread the bounce of a length ball from Nazir and top-edged it, handing a simple catch to Paras Dogra. The dismissal added to Rohit’s recent struggles with the bat, leaving fans and pundits concerned about his form ahead of upcoming international assignments.

A memorable moment for Umar Nazir

For Jammu and Kashmir pacer Nazir, Rohit’s wicket was a defining moment in his career. Nazir, who maintained a tight line and length throughout his spell, not only dismissed the Indian captain but also scalped three other key Mumbai batters, including Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube. His fiery bowling performance ensured that Jammu and Kashmir remained competitive in the first innings. However, it was the dismissal of Rohit, one of the most celebrated batters in world cricket, that stood out as the highlight of the day.

Nazir reveals why he didn’t celebrate Rohit’s wicket

While most bowlers would have celebrated exuberantly after dismissing a player of Rohit’s caliber, Nazir chose to stay composed. Speaking to the media after Day 1, Nazir revealed that his decision not to celebrate Rohit’s wicket stemmed from his deep admiration for the Indian captain.

As a self-proclaimed fan of Rohit, Nazir felt it was important to show respect rather than rejoice after dismissing a player he idolized. He further expressed that securing a victory in the match would hold immense pride for him and his team, especially given the significance of facing and competing against India’s captain on such a platform.

“The first thought in my mind was… I am a big fan of Rohit, and that is why I didn’t celebrate after taking his wicket today. If we win this game, it would be a proud moment because India’s captain is playing in the opposition,” said Nazir.
