On the evening of February 2, 2025, in Mumbai, Abhishek Sharma had what can only be described as a night to remember. During the fifth T20I against England, Abhishek not only played one of the most memorable innings of his burgeoning career but also etched his name into the annals of Indian cricket history. His performance was a blend of aggression, precision, and endurance, turning what could have been just another match into a personal milestone celebration.

Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking century in Mumbai

Playing in front of an adoring home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium, Abhishek unleashed a breathtaking display of batting. He scored a century off just 46 balls, making it the second-fastest T20I hundred for India, surpassing the record previously held by Sanju Samson. His innings of 127 runs came off 52 balls, which included 7 fours and a record-setting 13 sixes for an Indian in T20I cricket. This score also became the highest individual T20I score by an Indian, overtaking Shubman Gill‘s previous record. Abhishek’s knock was not just about scoring runs; it was about setting new benchmarks and showing the world his potential on the international stage.

Abhishek on his mentor Yuvraj Singh’s wish

After his phenomenal performance, Abhishek spoke about the influence and expectations from his mentor, Yuvraj Singh. He reflected how Yuvraj encouraged him to bat deeper into the innings rather than just providing quick starts. He acknowledges that Yuvraj would be pleased with his performance, as he successfully implemented their advice by staying at the crease till 15-20 overs.

“Probably he (Yuvraj Singh) should be [pleased], I think, after this, but he always wanted me to, you know, bat till 15, 20 overs. And as I’ve been in this team as well, even Gauti Bhai wanted the same thing. So, I think today was my day, and I implemented it well,” said Abhishek in the post-match presentation.
