India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has reiterated his desire for the team to play an aggressive brand of cricket in the upcoming ODI series against England. This aggressive approach, according to off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, will be spearheaded by captain Rohit Sharma, while Virat Kohli will play a crucial role in maintaining stability within the team.

The young Indian brigade registered an emphatic 4-1 victory in the recently-concluded T20I series against Jos Buttler’s England. So now, the Rohit-led experienced side will hope to regain form ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as they lost all the three ODIs played in Sri Lanka last year.

Ashwin confident of India’s aggressive brand of cricket

“It is important to realise Virat would be playing the role Hardik [Pandya] and Rinku [Singh] played in T20Is. Who will be the bridge between aggressive batting on top and finishing the batting in the latter end? Virat. Virat has to play to his strengths, and if he regains form, then there is nothing like it for the Indian cricket team. He doesn’t have to change his game at all. Honestly, what is the hurry in ODIs? It is important to do what is right by the 50-over format,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin shows faith in Rohit’s ability at the top

The Chennai-lad also emphasized that Rohit should continue his aggressive batting style, mirroring his successful performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.

“Considering how Rohit played in the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup, I don’t think he would have an issue. The way Rohit has adapted to the changing times and led from the front, I don’t think he will take a step back from the template,” Ashwin added.

The upcoming ODI series against England will provide an ideal platform for the team to implement this aggressive approach and fine-tune their strategies ahead of the Champions Trophy.
