India captain Rohit Sharma roared back to form with a magnificent century in the second ODI against England in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9. His masterful innings not only powered the hosts to a series-clinching victory but also silenced his critics after a lean patch. However, the match wasn’t without its tense moments, as Rohit was caught on camera snapping at the DJ for playing music after a floodlight failure caused a brief delay.

Rohit Sharma’s fiery outburst at DJ

Following the interruption in play, the music at Barabati Stadium continued, disrupting Rohit’s focus. In a fit of irritation, the Indian skipper was caught on camera shouting, “Band kar” (shut it off) at the DJ.

Despite the momentary lapse in composure, Rohit’s performance on the field was nothing short of spectacular. He scored a blistering 119 runs off just 90 balls, decorated with 12 fours and 7 sixes. Rohit’s innings saw him surpass Chris Gayle in the list of all-time six-hitters in ODIs, becoming second-highest with 337 sixes, only behind Shahid Afridi (351).

  • Blistering Strike Rate: Rohit’s quick-fire innings came at a strike rate of over 132, helping India maintain a healthy run rate throughout their chase.
  • Partnership with Gill: Rohit and Shubman Gill combined for a century partnership, setting a strong foundation for India’s chase. Gill contributed a swift 60 off 52 balls.

India clinch the series against England

India chased down England’s score of 304 with four wickets to spare, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Ravindra Jadeja‘s impressive bowling performance, with figures of 3/35, helped restrict England’s total. Rohit’s return to form was perfectly timed ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy. Rohit was named Player of the Match for his efforts.

It was good, really enjoyed being out there, scoring some runs for the team. Important game, series on the line. I broke it into pieces how I wanted to bat. It’s a format that is longer than T20 cricket and a lot shorter than Tests. Still, you need to assess and bat according to the situation. I wanted to stay focused and bat as deep as possible. Looking at the pitch when you play on black soil, the pitch tends to skid on a bit so it’s important that you show the full face of the bat. Then they were trying to bowl into the body and not give room so I prepared my plan as well. I accessed the gaps and obviously, I got good support from Gill and then Shreyas,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
