Australian left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been flagged for a potentially unlawful bowling technique following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Bowling action under scrutiny

Despite dominating as the series’ leading wicket-taker with 16 scalps, instrumental in Australia’s 2-0 clean sweep, Kuhnemann will now have to undergo mandatory biomechanical analysis within 21 days.

The assessment, governed by ICC regulations, will evaluate whether his arm exceeds the permissible 15-degree flexion limit during delivery. While suspended from bowling in international cricket pending results, he remains eligible to play in domestic Sheffield Shield matches, though restricted from bowling unless cleared.

Mandatory biomechanical assessment

“The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four One-Day Internationals. He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action been questioned.

“Cricket Australia will liaise closely with the ICC and independent experts in line with ICC regulations. No further comment will be made by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the matter is resolved.”

The findings, to be reviewed by the ICC, will determine Kuhnemann’s future participation in international matches.
