New Zealand have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with fast bowler Ben Sears ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The young pacer, who was set to make his debut in a major ICC event, felt discomfort during the team’s first training session in Karachi. A subsequent scan revealed a minor tear, sidelining him for at least two weeks.

In his place, Jacob Duffy has been called up to bolster New Zealand’s bowling attack. The injury not only disrupts Sears’ personal milestone but also forces the team to recalibrate their plans for the prestigious tournament.

A dream deferred for Ben Sears

For Sears, the Champions Trophy was supposed to be a career-defining moment. The 25-year-old speedster has been on the rise, impressing with his raw pace and ability to deliver under pressure. However, fate had other plans. During the team’s first training session in Karachi, Sears experienced pain in his left hamstring, which was later diagnosed as a minor tear. The injury requires a two-week rehabilitation period, effectively ruling him out of the majority of the group stage matches.

Head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment in a media release shared by New Zealand, stating: “It’s always tough being ruled out of a major event at such a late stage, and it’s especially tough in Ben’s case given it would have been his first major ICC event.”

While Sears is expected to recover in time for New Zealand’s final group match against India, the team management decided it was best to replace him with a fully fit player to ensure they have a strong squad for the entire tournament.

Jacob Duffy: A ready-made replacement

Stepping into Sears’ shoes is Duffy, a seasoned campaigner from Otago. Duffy, who has been part of the ODI Tri-Series squad against Pakistan and South Africa, brings experience and familiarity with the conditions. His recent performances against Sri Lanka in the home series showcased his ability to perform at the international level, making him a reliable choice for the Black Caps. Stead praised Duffy’s readiness, his inclusion ensures that New Zealand’s bowling attack remains competitive, even in the absence of Sears.

“Jacob showed with his performances in the recent home series against Sri Lanka that he is more than capable at international level. He’s been part of the squad for the ODI Tri-Series, so he’s fully acclimatised and ready to go,” Stead added.

Champions Trophy is a high-stakes tournament, and injuries can significantly impact a team’s campaign. For New Zealand, losing a promising talent like Sears is undoubtedly a setback, but the team has shown resilience in the face of adversity before. With Duffy stepping in, the Black Caps will aim to maintain their momentum and make a strong start in the tournament.
