The ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 clash between Afghanistan and South Africa took an interesting turn as opening batter for the Proteas Tony de Zorzi was outmatched by Mohammad Nabi to mark the end of his time with bat. The wicket came at a critical juncture for the Afghans as they managed to avert early dominance from the rival side who enter into this match with a reputed and dedicated batting line-up which can upset any bowling unit.

Mohammed Nabi removes Tony de Zorzi early

The incident took place during the 5th over of the match after South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. Nabi was just brought to the attack by Afghan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi in an attempt to get an early breakthrough to his side.

The seasoned all-rounder delivered for his team as he bowled a short-length delivery on the middle stump which de Zorzi tried to pull on his on-side with the hope that it could get the intended momentum for a maximum. However, the ball could not get the bounce which the South African opener expected and could reach only as far as Azmatullah Omarzai who took a simple catch to mark the end of his innings. It was the first wicket for Afghanistan as they managed to send a dangerous looking de Zorzi back to the pavilion.

Ryan Rickelton’s century puts South Africa in  commanding position

Even though de Zorzi could not provide the Proteas the kind of start they had anticipated, the South African innings recovered from his departure soon as skipper Temba Bavuma and opener Ryan Rickelton placed their team in a dominant position against Afghanistan.

Rickelton was the star of the show for the Proteas as he carved out an outstanding 103-run knock off 106 balls to stabilize the South African innings. His innings was star-studded with 7 fours and a towering six. Rickelton along with Bavuma who scored 58 runs off 76 balls kept the momentum of the innings steady and developed a 129-run partnership.
