The world of cricket is no stranger to controversy and drama, but recent events involving Jason Gillespie and Aaqib Javed have brought the spotlight squarely on Pakistan‘s cricketing woes. Former Australian fast bowler Gillespie, who abruptly left his role as Pakistan’s Test head coach last December, has publicly criticized Javed, the current interim head coach of Pakistan, for his perceived ambition to secure the coaching role across all formats. Gillespie’s scathing remarks, labelling Javed a “clown,” have ignited a heated debate about the instability and internal conflicts within Pakistan cricket.
Pakistan’s performance and coaching changes
Pakistan’s recent performance in the Champions Trophy has been dismal, with the team failing to advance beyond the group stage after losses to New Zealand and India. Their final match against Bangladesh was washed out due to rain, further highlighting the team’s struggles. Javed, in a press conference, attributed these failures to the frequent changes in management and team personnel across formats. He noted that Pakistan have seen nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the past two years, a situation he believes would hinder any team’s progress.
Jason Gillespie’s criticism: A personal perspective
Gillespie, who played 71 Tests and 97 ODIs for Australia, was appointed as Pakistan’s Test coach in April 2023 but resigned less than eight months later. His departure followed an unsuccessful start and was preceded by South African Gary Kirsten stepping down as limited-overs coach in October. Gillespie accused Javed of undermining both him and Kirsten behind the scenes while campaigning for the all-format coaching role.
Gillespie’s reaction to Javed’s comments was swift and harsh. He termed Javed’s remarks as “hilarious” and accused him of plotting to take over the coaching role while undermining his predecessors. Gillespie’s frustration stems from what he perceives as Javed’s opportunistic behavior, which he believes is detrimental to the team’s stability.
Gillespie took to social media and wrote, ” This is hilarious. Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown 🤡”

Impact on Pakistan cricket
The verbal spat between Gillespie and Javed has exposed deeper issues within Pakistan cricket. The frequent changes in coaches, captains, and selectors have created an environment of uncertainty, making it challenging for the team to achieve consistency. Gillespie’s departure and his subsequent criticism highlight the lack of communication and trust between coaches and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Gillespie’s resignation was partly due to the PCB’s decision not to renew the contract of high-performance coach Tim Nielsen, a move Gillespie felt was made without his input. This lack of communication and respect from the PCB led to his decision to leave the role.
Aaqib Javed’s role and future in Pakistan cricket
Javed’s interim coaching position was initially set to expire after the Champions Trophy 2025. However, with the PCB yet to announce a replacement, Javed will continue in his role for Pakistan’s upcoming tour to New Zealand, starting March 16. Despite the controversy, Javed remains a key figure in Pakistan cricket, serving as both interim coach and national selector.
