India’s veteran cricketer Gautam Gambhir is renowned to carry his heart on his sleeve. He is one of those cricketers who is never short on words – be it on the field or off the field.
Gambhir’s responses are always candid. Whenever the media persons have thrown in a question at the southpaw, not only has he answered them with utmost honesty but also has given proper justifications for his claims.
Recently, the Delhi lad was asked to name a bowler whom he considers as the fiercest in world cricket. True to his nature, the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper without any uncertainty singled out the lanky Proteas paceman Morne Morkel. Gambhir also added that he had always wished to have him in his side and that’s the reason why he roped him for KKR.
“Morne Morkel is the fiercest bowler I have ever faced. That’s why we got him in KKR as well. I thought he was the toughest bowler I faced. Even when he was playing for Delhi. Every time I faced him, I wish we had him in our team. And the moment he was released, I said Morne Morkel,” Gambhir was quoted as saying to Gaurav Kapur in a show called ‘Breakfast with Champions’.
“Very and the reason was that I grew up in an environment where on Saturdays and Sundays I used to get an opportunity of playing a game with friends. If you are unbeaten on Sunday, you will get a turn next week on Saturday and if you get out Sunday then you have to wait for your opportunity the next Sunday,” said Gambhir when asked whether he was fiercely competitive.
“So the thing was I wanted to score runs, I wanted to be unbeaten, I wanted another opportunity the next week. So that made me competitive as well. I knew that if I wasn’t competitive then the next week I might be a fielder. And you would never want to do that because you wait an entire week just to end up fielding. So that is not great thing,” he concluded.
