In what will be remembered as another golden chapter in the Indian Premier League (IPL)’s illustrious history, Virat Kohli added yet another accolade to his glittering resume on Thursday (April 10).
Eighteen seasons of consistency for RCB: Milestone moment
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru icon became the first player in IPL history to reach a landmark tally of total boundaries – a feat that cements his status as one of the greatest batters in T20 cricket. The moment came during Match 24 of IPL 2025 at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where RCB hosted the Delhi Capitals. In the fourth over of the innings, Kohli dispatched DC captain Axar Patel for a soaring six over long-on. That stroke wasn’t just another display of power – it was history in motion. It took Kohli to an astounding 1000 total boundaries in the IPL, comprising 721 fours and 279 sixes.
Kohli’s journey in the IPL is unparalleled. He is the only player to have featured in all 18 IPL seasons since the league’s inception in 2008. Through every season, Kohli has evolved – from a promising young batter into the most dependable and iconic name in Indian cricket’s T20 landscape. While his stroke-making was traditionally built on timing and placement, over time, Kohli has added the power-hitting arsenal to his game. This transformation is reflected in his six-hitting numbers, which once trailed behind his peers but now sit among the league’s elite.

Leading the charts: Virat Kohli’s journey of dominance
- Most Fours in IPL History: Kohli continues to top this chart with 721 fours, staying comfortably ahead of all other active players. Only Shikhar Dhawan, with 768 fours, has more, but Dhawan has already taken retirement from all forms of cricket in 2024.
- Third-Most Sixes in IPL: With 279 sixes, Kohli now only trails Chris Gayle (357) and Rohit Sharma (282). He recently surpassed AB de Villiers, reaffirming his transformation into a powerful striker of the cricket ball.
Recently at his beloved home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli has now hit the most sixes, breaking Gayle’s long-standing record of 127 at a single venue. The numbers speak not only of volume but of loyalty to his franchise and mastery of conditions.
Closing in on another elite record
Kohli’s glittering knock also brought him closer to another elite club. He now has 99 IPL fifties, just one shy of becoming the second batter in T20 cricket history to score 100 half-centuries, after David Warner. It’s yet another feather poised to land in his cap – possibly in the very next match. Despite Kohli’s historic feat, the night belonged to KL Rahul, who returned to his hometown and played a masterclass knock. Coming in under pressure after Delhi were reduced to 58/4 in a chase of 164, Rahul remained composed, orchestrating a stunning fightback with an unbeaten 93 off 53 deliveries. His innings, filled with elegance and calm under pressure, led DC to a six-wicket win over RCB, continuing the Bengaluru side’s frustrating season.
