In a major squad shake-up following their tour of New Zealand, Sri Lanka have unveiled a 17-member lineup for the upcoming Women’s ODI tri-series featuring India and South Africa. The tournament, scheduled to commence on April 27 in Colombo, serves as a crucial tune-up ahead of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India.

Eight changes as selectors ring the changes post-New Zealand tour

Sri Lanka’s selectors have opted for a significant overhaul after the team’s underwhelming performance against the White Ferns. Eight players from the previous squad have been replaced, with several familiar names making a return, alongside a notable debutant.

Off-spinner Malki Madara, who impressed with the ball in the T20I leg of the New Zealand tour, earns her maiden ODI call-up. Her sharp spell in that series played a key role in Sri Lanka’s only win on the tour.

Experienced faces return to bolster the squad

Several experienced campaigners have been recalled to strengthen the side, including Nilakshi Silva, Hasini Perera, Vishmi Gunaratne, and Inoka Ranaweera. All-rounders Piumi Wathsala and Dewmi Vihanga, along with middle-order batter Hansima Karunaratne, also return to the ODI setup.

These inclusions are seen as part of a broader strategy to strike a balance between youth and experience, with Chamari Athapaththu continuing to lead the side as captain.

The ODI tri-series will provide all three participating nations with a valuable opportunity to test combinations and fine-tune strategies in the build-up to the World Cup. With India and South Africa fielding strong sides, Sri Lanka will look to make home advantage count as they aim for a positive run in the competition.
